Steve Joseph Benedict Jr. 81, of Somerset, passed on May 15, 2017 at The Patriot. He was formerly a resident of Gray, PA and Sebring, FL. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Phyllis Eileen (Younkin) Benedict; parents Steve J. and Ida Mae (Bost) Benedict; and sister Nancy Jean Fort. Steve is survived by his loving companion Delores E. (Bittner) Lape; son Brian and wife Carmen, daughters Stephanie and Deanna; brothers Richard and companion Barbara, Robert and wife Donna,

Thomas and wife Georgia Ann, and Gary and wife Barbara; sister Delores and husband Lynn; companion Delores’ children Jon and wife Vicki, Bill and wife Beth, Jeff and companion Kim, Kerry and wife Dolores, Michael and wife Shelly, and Diane and husband Tim; and many grandchildren. Steve was a retail merchant with 40 years of service, starting in 1958 with the J.J. Newberry Co in Somerset. He also worked for National Fabrics, TGY Stores, and retiring in 1998 with Walmart in Sebring, FL. He was inducted into the Somerset County Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. He had numerous Major League tryouts until becoming disabled after a tryout with the Detroit Tigers. He was also a member of the Indoor Golf League at The Alley, the Northwinds Senior Golf League, and the Mountain Field and Stream Hunt Club in Berlin. Friends will be received from 4-7 PM Friday with a service to follow at 7 PM at Miller Funeral Home and Crematory, Somerset. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the American Cancer Society.
